What llms.txt is, and what it won't do
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a list of its most useful pages. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 (llmstxt.org).
The format
An H1 with your site name (the only required part), a blockquote summary, optional plain paragraphs, then H2 sections that each list links as [name](url): note. A section named "Optional" marks links an AI tool can skip when it's short on space.
Will it help my Google rankings?
No. Google says llms.txt won't positively or negatively affect visibility in Search, and in June 2026 it noted the file isn't required for Google Search. OpenAI's crawler documentation points site owners to robots.txt, not llms.txt. Ahrefs found that 97% of llms.txt files got zero AI requests in May 2026.
So why add one?
It takes five minutes, costs nothing, and gives AI agents and developer tools that do read it a clean summary of your business. Adoption grew 8.8x in a year, from about 4,000 sites to over 36,000 (Originality.ai, July 2026). Just don't expect it to get you recommended on its own.
What actually gets you named by AI
